The Best of Uvita: A guide to Get the Most out of your Stay in the Southern Coast

Welcome to Uvita, a hidden gem on Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast, where lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and abundant wildlife come together to create the perfect tropical escape. This charming town, known for its amazing humpback whale watching and breathtaking sunsets, offers a more peaceful and laid-back experience compared to busier destinations throughout Costa Rica. Its the mix of unpaved roads, cozy cafes, and vibrant local restaurants nestled among the trees that gives it a unique charm. With 3 national parks all in close proximity, Corcovado National Park, Manuel Antonio and Marino Ballena, Uvita is a nature lover’s paradise. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Uvita has it all.

In this guide, we’ll explore some incredible things to do and see, ensuring your journey through one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful coastal regions is unforgettable.  Lets go ….

First, How to Get to Uvita

By Car

Driving is the best way to get to Uvita, especially if you want the flexibility to explore the surrounding areas. From San José, it’s about a four-hour drive along the scenic Costanera Highway (Route 34). The road is well-paved, making it a smooth journey. You will come across a couple tolls on Route 27 (they take card payment now!) Which will amount to $5USD.  If you’re coming from Manuel Antonio, Uvita is just about an hour south, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the coastline on your way. To get to many of the places in Uvita and to Vayu Retreat Villas – 4×4 is NOT needed. If your travels include high terrane off roading in the mountains, then yes we recommend a 4×4!

We recommend to rent a car in Costa Rica with Adobe (read our guide about Renting a car in Costa Rica). They have upfront pricing with no hidden fees and the most locations in Costa Rica. Book your car here.

By Shuttle or Bus

For those not keen on driving, shuttle services are widely available from San José, or you can hop on the TRACOPA bus, which runs directly to Uvita. The bus ride is comfortable and takes about five hours, offering a more budget-friendly option (usually around $17USD.) For private shuttles, contact us to arrange your ride and offer a quote.

Domestic Flights to Nearby Airports

Another option is to take a domestic flight from San José to Palmar Sur or Quepos. From there, Uvita is just a short drive away. Flying cuts down your travel time significantly, and you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the stunning coastline. Palmar Sur is only available by private charter – contact us for details.

Airlines are Sansa or Green Airways
