First, How to Get to Uvita
By Car
Driving is the best way to get to Uvita, especially if you want the flexibility to explore the surrounding areas. From San José, it’s about a four-hour drive along the scenic Costanera Highway (Route 34). The road is well-paved, making it a smooth journey. You will come across a couple tolls on Route 27 (they take card payment now!) Which will amount to $5USD. If you’re coming from Manuel Antonio, Uvita is just about an hour south, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the coastline on your way. To get to many of the places in Uvita and to Vayu Retreat Villas – 4×4 is NOT needed. If your travels include high terrane off roading in the mountains, then yes we recommend a 4×4!

By Shuttle or Bus
For those not keen on driving, shuttle services are widely available from San José, or you can hop on the TRACOPA bus, which runs directly to Uvita. The bus ride is comfortable and takes about five hours, offering a more budget-friendly option (usually around $17USD.) For private shuttles, contact us to arrange your ride and offer a quote.
Domestic Flights to Nearby Airports
Another option is to take a domestic flight from San José to Palmar Sur or Quepos. From there, Uvita is just a short drive away. Flying cuts down your travel time significantly, and you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the stunning coastline. Palmar Sur is only available by private charter – contact us for details.

1. Explore Marino Ballena National Park
Walk to the Whale Tail
Marino Ballena National Park: Famous for its seasonal humpback whale migrations and the iconic Whale Tail sand formation, this national park offers a unique experience during low tide. The Whale Tail stretches nearly 600 meters into the ocean, allowing you to walk with the sea on both sides. From July to October and December to March, it’s one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot humpback whales. The view of the mist-covered mountain range on your return adds to the park’s serene beauty.
The park is open daily at 8 AM, and the walk to the tail is about 30 – 40 minutes. The entrance fee is 6 USD per person.
2. Whale Watching in Uvita

Named as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica and just a short drive from Uvita, is Nauyaca Waterfalls. If you’re in Uvita and love waterfalls, this is a must see. The falls are divided into two levels, creating natural swimming pools at the base. Whether you hike, ride horseback, or take a 4×4, the journey to the falls is an adventure in itself. Once there, you can cool off with a swim or, if you’re feeling daring, try cliff jumping into the refreshing waters below (at your own risk!).
Best tip – go early! As it is a hot tourist spot, getting there right when the park opens is key to having a great experience

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, head to El Pavon Waterfall, located about 25 minutes from Uvita. Tip – after a dip at the falls go the tilapia restaurant located just above the falls on the right side of the road.

Closer to town, Uvita Waterfall is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. It features a natural water slide carved into the rock and several swimming pools to relax in. The entrance fee is minimal, making it a budget-friendly way to cool off after a day of exploring. This spot is perfect for families and those looking for a quick, refreshing adventure.
7. Best Beaches Around Uvita
Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa is one of Uvita’s most stunning beaches, known for its dark sand and palm tree-lined shores. It’s a favorite spot for surfers, especially during the early morning when the waves are just right. Playa Chaman/Colonia
Another less common location, Playa Chaman is a stunning beach located within the Marino Ballena National Park. Playa Ventanas
A little further out from Uvita (but closer to Vayu Retreat Villas) is the beautiful Playa Ventanas. Named for the rock formations that create “windows” (ventanas). A smaller beach that is in a little bit of a cove, it is usually calmer than the other beaches and not a spot for surfing. There is a parking fee of about $3 or 1200 Colones.

9. Day Trip to Corcovado National Park:

10. Caño Island Snorkelling and Scuba Diving
One of the best snorkelling and diving spots in Costa Rica is Caño Island, located just off the coast of Uvita. The waters surrounding this biological reserve are teeming with marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles, and even white-tip reef sharks. Tours to Caño Island often include lunch on a nearby beach, making it a full-day adventure. If you are certified in scuba diving there are options to do that as well. Manta Rays and sea turtles as well as reef sharks can be seen. Many of the dive centres also offer PADI certified scuba lessons.

This Tour is half day and costs around 100$ USD – We LOVE Osa Canyoning – you have the incredible opportunity to rappel down 8 waterfalls and traverse the rivers and rainforest seeing dart frogs and possibly 3 kinds of monkeys and birds. After doing this experience we could have spent all day at the waterfalls – and we definitely felt like if we didn’t make it to any of the other falls, it was ok!
You will get totally soaked on this tour – but it’s worth it!
14. Horseback Riding on the Beach & Through the Rainforest
One of our favourite, favourite, favourite (did we say favourite?) things to do is go horseback riding on the beach. There is really nothing quite like exploring Uvita’s natural beauty on horseback.
Imagine galloping through the waves on the beach – adrenaline pumping, trusting your horse below, there is nothing to describe it but truly magical.
Whether you’re riding along the beach at sunset or through the lush rainforest, horseback riding in Uvita is a an immersive way to connect in nature. Monkeys, scarlet macaws and sloths are often seen. The best tour is with Rancho La Merced that offers family-friendly tours that provide insight into the local flora and fauna.

15. Farmers Market – El Mercado de Bahia Ballena
For a taste of local culture, visit the Bahia Ballena Farmers Market, held every Wednesday and Saturday. Here, you’ll find fresh produce, handmade crafts, and locally sourced goods. - Aracari Restaurant at La Cusinga Lodge – an eco-friendly, farm-to-table dining experience with stunning rainforest and ocean views. The menu combines local Costa Rican dishes with fusion options, including vegan, vegetarian, and seafood specialties. Open daily from 7 AM to 9 AM for breakfast and from 11 AM to 8 PM for lunch and dinner, it’s a perfect stop after exploring the things to do in Uvita.
- Gusto Italiano – perched on a hilltop with breathtaking views of Playa Hermosa its another stunning option for things to do in Uvita.. The homemade pasta (they import their flour from Italy!) and wood-fired pizza are outstanding as are their Italian wines. While it’s a bit pricey, the experience and service make it worthwhile. Call +506 8448 3571 to book. The drive takes about 8 minutes from Uvita, and we recommend using an SUV for the final unpaved stretch. Open daily 12-8pm Except Tuesdays.
